Multiculturalism in Britain, Part 1

The first issue I want to raise within this blog is multiculturalism in Britain. Multiculturalism is happening all around the world, but there is quite an extreme case of it in Britain. Britain has been a very diverse nation for a very long time. This aspect of Britain has always caused a lot of debate.

One of the main issues that people talk about with regards to multiculturalism is immigration, and whether it is good for Britain. The Prime Minister has even had his say on the matter: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-12371994. In this speech Cameron states that Britain has not got a strong enough identity, and that the multiculturalism in our country causes extremism. He is not totally against multiculturalism, but he thinks it must be used in the right way, in his opinion it is not used in the right way in Britain. This begs the question, can multiculturalism ever work, or is it a completely bad concept?

We also need to look at the opinions of the people of Britain, not just the leader, if we really want to grasp whether it is working or not. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/talking_point/3600519.stm This news article talks about multiculturalism in British society, but there is also a large section underneath the article where members of the public have posted their opinions on the whole situation. The most common opinion seems to be that diversity has always been present in Britain, and we have no reason to hold prejudices against someone because of their ethnicity. I agree with this sentiment, and I think that the sooner we accept multiculturalism the better.

  1. I found this blog really interesting!

I completely agree with you, I think once multiculturalism is more accepted then everything will be made easier! There are still so many prejudices surrounding people today.

My friend does Criminology and is currently focussing on the topic of Islamophobia, she told me that Islamophobia is paramount in films such as Indiana Jones and some Disney Films (such as 'Aladin')where Muslim sterotyopes, such as getting a hand chopped off for stealing, plays a big part without having any real relevance to the film itself!

  2. Wow that's really interesting, I didn't realise that sort of thing happened in films. I suppose film directors can get away with putting in their beliefs discreetly without people realising, this can be bad in ways I imagine. Islamophobia will only cause Islamic extremism to get worse, if we can just accept that people have different beliefs to our own then the world will be a much nicer place to live in.
